two centuries of story
At the heart of Sandy River Distillery stands a piece of Virginia that predates the Civil War. Our tasting room is a fully restored 1840s log cabin — moved from its original site in Charlotte County Court House and meticulously rebuilt on these grounds, plank by weathered plank.
The distillery itself was founded in 2021 by Mark and Candice Smith, who grew up in Saint Maarten — a 36-square-mile Caribbean island where every culture carries its own distilling tradition. That worldliness shapes every bottle: each spirit is a tribute to the craft traditions they encountered across their travels, grounded in 100% Virginia-grown grain.
Sandy River put Rice, VA on the craft spirits map — proving that small-town Virginia can produce grain-to-glass spirits of national caliber.
